Father's Day

Father's Day was first conceived in Washington, America in 1909 by a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd while listening to a Mother's Day sermon. Having been raised by her father following the death of her mother, Sonora wanted her father to know just how special he was to her. She chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration on the 19th June, 1910, as her father had been born in June.

In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City, in 1956 Father's Day was recognised by a Joint Resolution of Congress and in 1972 President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday in June.
